Internet of Things – to give you a digital advantage

Article: IoT makes complex processes more transparent and more efficient

The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the driving forces of digitalisation. It makes machines smarter and processes more productive. It changes the way we work and allows you to create completely new business models.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is seen today as a key factor for efficient processes and future competitiveness. IoT links devices together in real time and turns production lines or processes into transparent overall systems. Machines and assets continuously record data about conditions and events. This information is then coherently analysed on a central IoT platform. At the same time, it is possible to represent assets and processes virtually as a digital twin, to manage machines centrally and to catalogue all assets digitally.

"Up-to-date and reliable knowledge about conditions and contexts is worth its weight in gold when it comes to the quality of decisions in our business processes. IoT provides us with a basis for this essential task."

Modular IoT infrastructure

Networked sensors bring clarity to processes and assets. View utilisation, conditions and measured values in real time, as a long-term analysis or even as a forecast. Our "IoT platform" integrates operational technology (OT) securely into information technology (IT) with benefits for maintenance, logistics and operations. Automations and notifications trigger defined actions or alerts for specific conditions. The IoT platform offers ready-to-use, easy-to-configure services and features to manage devices securely, exchange data, generate events and visualise IoT data. The platform tools can be flexibly combined.

What is a digital twin?

In industry, but also in the railway, the term "digital twin" refers to a digital representation or model of an asset, installation or process. It involves digitally recording, simulating or monitoring data, conditions and behaviour to enable monitoring in real time as well as forecasts and simulations. Another important field of application is the provision of safe, cost-effective training and education using the virtual image. Digital twins are based on detailed information and characteristics obtained from both real sensors and external data.
