Digital information for train drivers

Using tablet PCs and apps to work in a practice-oriented and efficient way.

Rail-in-Motion helps you to
  • Considerably reduce time for gathering information and loss of information
  • Make workflows more efficient
  • Provide mobile employees with up-to-date information at all times

It is all too easy for mobile employees of a company to lose track of things in today's information jungle. Some information is available only in paper form while other details are sent by e-mail or data is located on internal company drives or in databases – and the very latest news is sent to recipients by SMS or Messenger.

That's how it always used to be for train drivers. They had to personally pick up all their necessary paperwork from central operations offices before they started their shift. This made the process of gathering information very time-consuming and required the drivers to carry around a bag weighing up to 5 kg throughout the day.

With Rail-in-Motion (RiM), employees with mobile workplaces, such as train drivers, can now access all the necessary information for specific situations on one single device. Train drivers receive all data on a portable, personalised RiM tablet PC that they need to carry out their work at the right time and in the right place. They can even be notified about last-minute changes to shift schedules or disruptions to operations during their shift and react accordingly. The device can also be used to give feedback directly to the relevant system.

Employees now not only have access to "static" information that is available centrally but also have mobile access to other ICT applications that were previously only available on office workstations. Time-consuming information-gathering processes and loss of information have become a thing of the past.

The Rail-in-Motion information and communication platform can also be transferred to other logistics fields and similar areas of application or user profiles. DB Systel can tailor the RiM apps developed to date to meet your special requirements. We can also link up existing ICT applications as sources of information using individual connectors.

Our RiM apps

Instructions and documents: Provision of all necessary documents (including confirmation of receipt) as well as "internet fallback level of the electronic timetable" (IFL) that give train drivers personal train information for the upcoming journey.

Duty roster: Display and processing of work schedules in combination with a planning or scheduling system.

Forms: Centrally managed forms can also be accessed for mobile use and dispatch, e.g. to report damage.

Developed in Rail-in-Motion, the "Damage notification" form allows employees to directly register a problem with the train during the journey and communicate it to the maintenance units. They can use the tablet PC to take photos and indicate damaged areas on the spot for documentation purposes.

You can use all DB Systel applications in combination with the basic Rail-in-Motion Base application and with a managed tablet PC via the Rail-in-Motion platform.

Optimal planning of maintenance processes

Minimal costs due to lower repair outlays.

Rail-in-Motion helps you to
  • Reduce the duration of repairs
  • Optimise maintenance processes
  • Save costs

Modern and future-proof IT is crucial to the economic development of companies. In production in particular, it opens up a whole host of new opportunities for making employees' work easier. Developed in Rail-in-Motion, the "Damage notification" form allows drivers to directly register a problem with the train during the journey and communicate it to the maintenance units. The train driver can use the RiM tablet PC to take photos and indicate damaged areas on the spot for documentation purposes.

Depending on the problem in question, a decision can be made on site about whether a technician should board the train at the next station and try to repair the damage while the train is still in operation or whether workshop maintenance is required.

If the damage is severe and extensive repairs are required, an order can be sent to the maintenance workshop by e-mail and scheduled accordingly. This enables procurement of the necessary spare parts materials to be initiated while the train is still en route. The workshop schedules and maintenance processes can be planned optimally by coordinating the delivery times of spare parts, the current operational and route planning of the train and the availability of workshop space. This also allows the times that trains spend in maintenance workshops for repairs to be reduced. So using Rail-in-Motion ultimately helps trains to resume regular operation quickly. This not only saves costs but also optimises overall maintenance procedures.

Rail-in-Motion can also be transferred to other similar areas of application or user profiles. We can tailor all RiM apps developed to date to meet your specific requirements, and we can link up different ICT applications as sources of information using individual connectors. We will gladly share our experience with you – Just contact us!

High service quality due to modern information management

Digital communications for mobile employees.

Rail-in-Motion helps you to
  • Considerably reduce time for gathering information and loss of information
  • Make workflows more efficient
  • Conveniently send your employees digital information

The digital age is becoming a part of everyday life for attendants and on-board service staff. When necessary, they can quickly call up on the tablet PC many documents that they would have otherwise had to carry around in paper form.

The end user can store locally on the tablet PC selected regulations that are maintained centrally. This eliminates the laborious processes of printing, updating, distributing and carrying information around. Rail-in-Motion allows a wide range of data to be made available conveniently on a mobile device in the form of PDFs, videos, images and so on.

Besides providing a delivery confirmation for all documents, you can also activate a confirmation of receipt, in which case the documents in question are marked as requiring a confirmation of receipt for the user. So by sending a confirmation of receipt, the user can verify electronically that the document has been received. The relevant target e-mail address can, of course, be configured individually.

With Rail-in-Motion, employees can synchronise their personalised tablet PC before starting work in order to have all important information at their fingertips during the journey, such as hygiene standards to be observed and company regulations that are stored in a document management system. RiM allows attendants and on-board service staff to call up this data at their mobile workplace whenever they want and, therefore, stay up to date.

Rail-in-Motion can also be transferred to other similar areas of application or user profiles. We can tailor all RiM apps developed to date to meet your specific requirements, and we can link up different ICT applications as sources of information using individual connectors. As the next step, we plan to also connect information systems for passengers. We will gladly share with you our experience as Europe's largest mobility service provider – Just contact us!
