Digitalisation allows new forms of communication, collaboration and value creation. To fulfil the growing requirements end to end, tools are needed that optimally support processes and relationships in technical terms.

The nature and speed of work are changing. Intelligent machines exchange information with each other as well as with people in order to organise themselves independently or to coordinate and optimise processes and deadlines. This also makes the work of people significantly more connected. The interrelationships in this changed working world are referred to as "Work 4.0".

Deutsche Bahn is actively helping to shape digital transformation because the transport and logistics industry is also changing rapidly as a result of digitalisation. This has resulted in many new fields of action for Work 4.0. Technology is becoming more autonomous, resources are being freed up for more service. The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing workflows and processes. For example, maintenance intervals are estimated electronically and sensors provide information about the position of networked traction units and freight wagons. Also, inspections for ensuring functional operation no longer have to be performed.


Modern technologies create new ways of collaborating. For example, encrypted storage of data in the cloud with DB Office 365 allows multiple people to work together on the same document at the same time – whether they are working in the office, on an ICE or at the customer’s site. Different technical solutions help teams working at different times and in different places to network, and thus to collaborate.


Education is going digital too: new technologies are enabling new ways of learning and teaching. For example, virtual reality (VR) – immersion in a digital reality – is not just a visualisation tool for engineers at Deutsche Bahn, but is actively being used to instruct train drivers with the company’s own VR application "EVE" (Engaging Virtual Education). In this way, practical training can take place without real learning objects. Time and cost savings are obvious – not only is the need for real learning objects reduced significantly, but so are travel expenses. In addition, training for safety-critical situations can be risk-free.
